What a summer, eh? We’ve tanned, barbecued and partied like it was 1976. How great was that? Next up: flu season.

With the first golden leaves of autumn comes the first round of viral misery.

What is flu and why do we get in the autumn and winter? Influenza (flu) is an infection of the lungs and upper airways, which is not to be confused with the much milder common cold. With flu comes fever, muscle ache, headaches and extreme fatigue. Symptoms last up to seven days and complications can include bronchitis, pneumonia and ear infections. We catch flu from being around those infected (cough or sneeze into a tissue please!) or from touching surfaces they have touched, such as doorknobs, where the virus can live for up to 24hrs. Flu is highly infectious and nobody at your office, especially your boss, will thank you for ‘powering through it’.

Flu travels through populations all year round, but people become ill ten times more often during ‘flu season’. Theories why abound – perhaps it’s because we are indoors more? Cold means the virus is preserved longer? Our protective nasal membranes are dehydrated in cold weather? Nobody quite knows.

Here are some tips we can use to avoid flu or minimise its effects:

>Wash hands and surfaces. (A no-brainer, but still)

>Avoid people with flu. They must suffer alone

>Consider taking the flu vaccine if over 65, pregnant or suffering with a long-term illness

>Boost our natural immunity with exercise, sleep and diet, the staples of a healthy lifestyle.
