Smart Moves On The Go!

Fitness expert Pat Divilly explores how to eat well and stay healthy even when time is against you.

Although I live in Galway, I typically spend a week a month travelling the country for talks and seminars and up to three or four months of the year travelling abroad for work or mountaineering trips. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle whilst in one place can be difficult, but when we become busier it becomes tricky to stay consistent with a way of eating that gives us the energy we require to function at our best. So here are my top recommendations for nourishing your body and mind whilst on the move…

Preparation is key. If you are short on time it is worth skipping a gym session and instead use that hour to batch cook meals that can be stored in the fridge or freezer and brought with you throughout the week. It’s also worth checking in with your upcoming weekly schedule each Sunday and taking note of where you’ll be throughout the week so that you can prepare the meals you’ll need or check ahead with restaurants or cafes near where you’ll be that will tie in with your requirements. Environment is more important than willpower. Often we rely too much on motivation or willpower rather than setting our environment up for success. For example make a trail mix with nuts, berries and dark chocolate and leave small containers in the car, at the office or in the kitchen so you’ve always got a healthy snack to hand. Similarly leave bottles of water at the front door to remind you to grab a bottle as you leave the house. When I’m traveling I always leave my Udo’s Vegan Capsules in my toiletries bag so that after brushing my teeth in the morning they are right there so I don’t forget to supplement with my healthy fats whilst on the run.

Take care of the basics. I often meet clients who have a perfectionist mentality. If they can’t get things perfect they’ll throw the plan completely out the window. For example, whilst on the move you may not be able to get exactly what you would have had at home, but it’s not a reason to go completely off plan. Stick with the basics ensuring you are getting enough water, some vegetables or salad, a protein source such as meat, fi sh or eggs and healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocados or oils. Don’t let perfect get in the way of progress.

Nourish the mind. A bonus thought for those who spend a lot of time traveling or commuting. Turn your journey into a mobile classroom by listening to podcasts or audio books that provide education and inspiration rather than listening to negative news that is beyond your control. Much like our body digests the foods we eat over time, our mind does the same with the information we consume.
